About Yaxhá-Nakum-Naranjo National Park

Yaxhá-Nakum-Naranjo National Park, located in the Petén region of Guatemala, spans approximately 37,160 hectares of dense tropical rainforest and ancient Maya cultural sites. The park protects three of the most important and interconnected archaeological sites in the Maya world: Yaxhá, Nakum, and Naranjo. Yaxhá, the largest site, features an extensive ritual core with over 500 structures, including pyramids, plazas, ball courts, and causeways dating from 600 BCE to 900 CE. Nakum, situated about 15 kilometers southeast of Yaxhá, is renowned for its well-preserved palaces and temple complexes. Naranjo lies to the northeast and is known for its impressive stelae, plazas, and evidence of vibrant political history in the Classic Maya period. Beyond its cultural wealth, the park's tropical wet forest is a biodiversity hotspot, harboring species such as spider monkeys, howler monkeys, toucans, jaguars, and a variety of orchids. The park also features several lakes, including Lake Yaxhá, which is ideal for birdwatching and kayaking. Visitors can explore a network of trails linking the major ancient sites, with opportunities for wildlife viewing and experiencing Guatemalan jungle scenery. The combination of profound archaeological significance and rich natural environment makes Yaxhá-Nakum-Naranjo a unique destination for history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and outdoor adventurers seeking to explore the intertwined heritage of the Maya civilization and Central American wilderness.
